About Foodbank

Basically, we’re the fridge and pantry for some of the most well-known charities, including the Salvation Army and Vinnies. Each week, we also run fresh food markets and mobile supermarket buses in the heart of communities so families can come and collect enough fresh produce for an entire week – free of charge.

Through our network of 500 charity partners and more than 1,000 schools, we are feeding 69,000 Victorians a day. If you’re thinking ‘wow, that can’t be right!’ sadly, that is the situation, as so many people are struggling to afford even the basics. On a happy note, we’ve got loads of incredibly generous people around us supporting our work to make sure food gets to those who need it. Like our amazing community fundraisers who are such a vital part of the story, helping raise $’s so we can buy and distribute beautiful, fresh, healthy food to more people, in more places so they can thrive.

Mobile Supermarket Buses

With the support of Kinetic, we’ve transformed two 18-metre buses normally used for airport transfers, into the coolest mobile supermarkets on the planet. They offer a miniature supermarket experience with shelving and refrigeration stocked with a range of fresh produce, pantry, and staple items. We visit culturally diverse communities across Melbourne with ingredients to suit their needs. Each mobile supermarket delivers 2,000 kg of fresh, healthy food – that’s 3,636 meals every trip.

Farms to Families Markets

Our Farms to Families program provides healthy and nutritious produce through regular monthly markets to people in communities near and far, particularly in regional Victoria. Working with our charity partners, Farms to Families markets provide a welcoming space for the local community to access seasonal veggies and fruit, bread and milk. Each market provides up to 300 families with enough fresh produce for an entire week.

Community Food Centres

We’ve wrapped our arms around regional Victoria with two purpose-built Foodbank Community Food Centres – one in Ballarat and one in Morwell. Created in partnership with Vic Government these ‘hubs’ celebrate and support local communities through free food programs, community food markets, social enterprise cafes, veggie gardens and farming, cooking classes and training. No longer do we need to truck fresh, chilled and frozen food to these regions from Melbourne – healthy food is there for people who need it. Right where they live.
