1 in 3 Victorian households can't afford the food they need

Hunger lives in every community, in every postcode. On your street.

Across our state, 1 in 3 households is struggling to put food on the table.

937,235 homes with families and flatmates, empty-nesters and those who live alone.

Homes where food runs out before more money comes in. Where skipping meals to afford bills is the only option. Where sometimes there are days when there’s no food at all.

As the new Foodbank Hunger Report reveals, hunger is now mainstream. It’s an everyday heartache for hundreds of thousands of Victorians. Someone you know, someone you love.

It’s more than 633,000 kids whose mums and dads are going without.

This scale can feel overwhelming, distressing. But it’s not insurmountable.

Because we have people like you.

With your incredible support, we can urgently source enough food to help families who need it this Christmas. Tonnes of fresh stone fruit and beautiful veggies, pantry essentials, yoghurt and bread, and some festive fare.

Which is why, this Christmas, we’re asking Victorians to make room for one more helping. Not on your own plate, but on someone else’s.

Because sometimes the most generous helping you can give is helping someone in need.

Thanks for making sure everyone counts.

Some of the people you help

Christmas may still be 8 weeks away, but Cindy and James have been planning since June. Toys on lay-by, stretching every dollar, doing everything they can to make sure it's a special time for their children.

This year has been particularly tough. James works as a tow-truck driver, but his income doesn't cover the bills and rent the way it used to.

We met Cindy and James at our Morwell Community Food Centre last month. Their four-year-old daughter Ruby was in tow while the older children were at school. They'd come in to stock up on pantry staples, yoghurt, protein, and enough fresh fruit and vegetables to feed their young family for the week.

They planned to fill the kids up with "a lot of pasta and mince dishes".

"Without this, we'd be really struggling," Cindy told us.

This Christmas, your support will help make sure families like Cindy and James' have food on the table.

Thank you for your kindness 💕
